Event Details
Join us for a special event with author Sandra McKay, as she reads from her novel, A Place for Me: An Orphan’s Journey Home. This compelling story brings to life the experiences of one child among the thousands who rode the orphan trains in the early 1900s. Based on McKay’s grandmother, Dora, the story captures the resilience and heartbreak of a young girl whose mother, overwhelmed by hardship, had to give up her children. Taken from her bed in the night and separated from her brothers, Dora’s journey to an orphanage in Chicago was only the beginning of her search for a place to call home.
After the reading, copies of A Place for Me will be available for purchase and signing for $20.
The event will conclude with a meaningful panel discussion featuring descendants of Orphan Train Riders, who will share stories of their ancestors' experiences. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore a unique chapter of American history and celebrate stories of family, resilience, and hope.
